There are many ways to store bread, but not all are good. When done improperly, the result is a quick stale or mouldy bread. To avoid this, it is good to know a few facts about the bread, which is always suitable for everyone!
Freshness on yeast and sourdough

How to store bread to keep it fresh for longer?
Contrary to what we often think, bread “likes” air access and should not be tightly packed. To keep it fresh, it must be provided with the right conditions.
How to store bread to keep it fresh for longer? We can choose wooden, metal or ceramic haversacks, which will work great. additionally, if we want to protect the loaf against drying out, we can:
- wrap it in a cotton kitchen cloth
- keep it in a linen bag
- store it in paper that allows air to enter
- put a piece of apple in the haversack, which will increase air humidity and help keep it fresh for longer
- freeze bread and store it for up to 3 months (freezing keeps it fresh and prevents mould).
How to store bread so that it does not get mouldy?
Mould on bread is often the result of inadequate storage and the lack of air access. What is not conducive to our loaves are certainly refrigerators and plastic bags. This is where moulds like to grow. Warm bread put in an airtight foil bag is the perfect condition for their development. Mould is initially invisible to the naked eye. The typical fluff does not appear until later.
So how do you keep bread fresh, so it doesn’t get mouldy? First, take it out of the bag as soon as you bring it from the store and use one of the storage mentioned above methods.
We should also remember about regular, weekly cleaning of the haversack. This will prevent the growth of mould. Wooden haversacks can be wiped with a cloth soaked in vinegar diluted in water (it kills mould spores). Metal or ceramic dishes should be washed with washing-up liquid and then rinsed.
But when it turns stale bread …
What if the bread turns stale? There is also a solution here. We can use it in many ways and make it, for example:
- Flavoured croutons for soup – slice the bread, bake it to make some olive oil, and finally add a chopped garlic clove.
- Toasted bread – ordinary wheat bread is also perfect for toasts, which, after baking, can be eaten with whatever we like best.
- French Toast – Bread in egg – this is another way to use stale bread. Roll the slices in a beaten egg. Fry in a pan, and then sprinkle with chives. Delicious and original breakfast ready!
As you can see, stale bread is a process that can be delayed. By knowing how to store bread, we can enjoy its taste and keep it fresh for longer.
